Although an effective method of persuasion, saying something louder, or with many more words, does not make it more compelling.

The best method of persuasion always allows the other person some room to manoevre.
But if you are determined NOT to be persuaded, I have found the following works very well.
'Sorry, youer idea will not work.'
'Whyever not?'
'Because I'm not doing it....'

Is that the same principle that compels some people to speak louder when addressing someone who doesn't understand english?

Sadly as long as it works people will use it, it belongs in that ignoble list of what are called 'shut up' arguments. These also include ways of silencing people by making them feel guilty about their opinions (shut up your a Nazi) and one's that assume that one knows best (shut up I'm an expert) If you are interested in this there's a great book called Bad Thoughts by Jamie Whyte. From what I've read on your blog you would enjoy it.
